Okay Ladies, Part 1 of this how to get your life back series we discussed Money. Now, let’s talk about job loss. It typically takes at least a few weeks to land an interview once you have been laid off from your job. Therefore, here are a few things that you can do in order to increase your chances of getting the call.
What’s GOING ON?
Over the next 20 days what you do is critical to landing something quickly. Remember the world is starting to open up again and there are many employers who are actively searching for candidates. However, I do want you to keep in mind that there are some industries that may have a longer turnaround time for their hiring needs such as education and banking. These industries are directly in contact with a vulnerable population count. Consequently, if there is any threat of contamination to the virus they may hold off from hiring additional employees at the moment. But, this doesn’t mean you can’t get your job hustle back.
STEPS TO HELP YOU HUSTLE BACK TO WORK
- STEP 1: Pull out your resume and update it with new contact information, work experience & education. If you don’t have a resume you can pull up a template offline and begin typing. In both cases, you will need to ask someone to review it for clarity. If you need assistance with creating a strong resume check out Linda Raynier on YOUTUBE. Her channel focuses on helping people prepare for interviews and other job-seeking skills.
- STEP 2: Let people know you are unemployed. I discuss this in my blog Post Being Laid Off: How I Handle the Reality. Next, be sure to put you’re job-seeking on social media like Linkedin this status informs recruiters to seek you out. Oh, yeah. ZipRecruiter is another account to set-up. Lastly, email people in your contact list who you can network with virtually or on a walk around the park.
- STEP 3: Calander block three hours a day to apply for jobs going forward. Nothing else should be scheduled during this time. By having this time established you can create a clear & realistic weekly goal of ten. That would be either apply for 10 jobs, engage in 10 networking opportunities, or you could have a few in each area. A good rule of thumb is that if you are qualified for 70 -100% of the job then apply. Either way, setting time and a clear weekly goal will keep you on track.
- STEP 4: If your current email is full of junk mail don’t waste time cleaning it out just create a new professional email account. Be sure to create folders in your Gmail account to easily find information and organize your email page. Double-check that your Resume, LinkedIn, and other accounts contain your correct email address.
REMINDERS IN THE PROCESS
- Follow-up on old applications every two weeks. This will allow you to keep up with positions that have been closed.
- Start putting your interview attire together. Being prepared never hurts anyone because positive energy will attract positive things.
- Work on your interview techniques. You can start by viewing Linda Raynier on YouTube to work on your skills.
- If you have a skill that you need to brush up on or want to learn try SkillShare an online platform that provides classes in animation, design, business, writing, and so much more. Prices range from $0-$$ to be taught by a master in the field of knowledge.
- Job searching is not a full-time job. It’s just a part of your day, so fill it with gaining knowledge, decluttering things that have piled up, prepare new approaches to your phone & face-to-face interview, build healthy mental & physical habits, and maybe do something for someone else.
Ladies, it’s okay to feel uncertainty. April’s blog post Living with Uncertainty supports that during these times you’re not alone. Keep moving forward. Any company would be blessed to have you as part of their team. You got this girl!!!! See you on Tuesday, June 9th at 7:00 pm for Part 3.

Great advice! Thanks for sharing.
Angela….thank you for reading and please share it with someone who may be in need of a little support in the job search area. Sometimes, people procrastinate because they don’t know how to start or to maintain progress.🌻
